About Your Home

Your Home is Australia’s trusted guide to designing and building an energy-efficient, sustainable home that uses less energy, is cheaper to run and is comfortable to live in.

Improving the quality of our homes is important for every household. Beyond the cost savings from lower energy bills, there are major health benefits from living in homes that are cool in summer, warm in winter and maintain good air quality all year round.

Residential buildings are responsible for 24% of our electricity use and over 10% of our greenhouse gas emissions, making it vital that we improve the efficiency and sustainability of the homes we build for our communities.

Developed by the Australian Government and written by over 50 experts in sustainability, building design and construction, Your Home provides comprehensive, independent and trusted advice to help households and industry create the sustainable, energy-efficient homes of the future.

Popular Your Home topics include orientation, insulation, shading and passive design elements, while the Design For Place free house designs feature is also consistently among the most-visited areas of the Your Home website.

Design For Place

Within Your Home, Design For Place provides free house plans designed by an architect in collaboration with an energy assessor. These plans serve as a guide to help people talk with their builder, designer and architect to create an energy-efficient, sustainable home tailored to their local climate and lifestyle.

Design For Place includes 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom house plans, all of which are customisable to meet individual needs and preferences.

Design For Place plans come with predicted Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) energy performance ratings and offer several options for meeting or exceeding National Construction Code requirements for energy efficiency.

Design For Place demonstrates how improvements to energy efficiency can lower predicted energy use, leading to a more affordable and sustainable living experience.

For example, the baseline energy-efficient 8.5-star Mallee House built in Brisbane is predicted to:

  • cost $927 per year in energy use
  • produce 3.62 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year.

While the most efficient 10-star Mallee House in Brisbane is predicted to:

  • have no energy running costs, generating more energy than it consumes. That saves the household $927 on energy bills every year.
  • produce no greenhouse gas emissions.

The most energy-efficient Design For Place plans optimised for Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, Cairns and Melbourne are predicted to save 40% from their heating and cooling energy bills compared to a standard 7-star energy rated home.

See the Design For Place page for more information.
